Estimating renovation costs: what does a renovation cost?

From kitchen to dormer: realistic cost ranges for the most common renovations.

Groundwerk editorial · Updated

A new kitchen costs €5,000–€25,000 depending on size and finish. A bathroom renovation €8,000–€20,000. Note: installers and contractors are often booked months in advance.

Adding a dormer: €10,000–€25,000 (permit-free up to certain dimensions). Rear extension: €25,000–€60,000 (permit often needed). Attic conversion: €15,000–€30,000.

Energy-saving measures: HR++ glazing (€3,000–€6,000), roof insulation (€3,000–€8,000), floor insulation (€2,000–€4,000), heat pump (€8,000–€15,000). Subsidies via the ISDE scheme and low-interest loans through the National Heat Fund (Warmtefonds).

Rule of thumb: budget 10–15% extra for unforeseen costs. For older properties (pre-1945) this can rise to 20–25%. Groundwerk automatically estimates renovation costs based on build year and condition.
